Chili du XIXe siècle
La position de Valparaiso en tant que plaque tournante de la mondialisation précoce l'a rendu particulièrement attrayant pour les immigrants, y compris les marchands britanniques qui ont vu les avantages d'établir des succursales locales de leurs sociétés commerciales. Ainsi, la situation privilégiée du Chili a conduit des ressortissants allemands, français et italiens à s'installer à des fins commerciales. Cependant, les marchands, ingénieurs et mineurs britanniques ont dominé le commerce avec le Chili tout au long du XIXe siècle ; la population britannique à Valparaiso comptait plus de 1 000 en 1865 et est passée à 1 600 en 1895. Et ces chiffres ne représentent qu'une fraction du nombre total d'immigrants britanniques à travers le Chili au cours de cette période, comme le montre ce graphique :
